Steven Alexander James was born on 21 November 1968 in Bournemouth. Somewhere during adolesence he adopted his middle name as his first name. Alex plays bass and has played with many bands, including Age Of Consent and Mr Pang's Bang Bangs. For a while he played in Southampton's FC, and when he left school he got 13 "O" levels and 3 "A" levels, from when they were difficult. He was the last to join the band (when it was known as Circus), because he didn't get along with Damon very well at first, but the access to a recording studio convinced him to join. Alex is well known for enjoying a drink or two (or seven), and is a member of the Groucho Club. He lists his hobbies as girls, galaxies, cheese, snooker and gigs. His mother is a volunteer worker and his father is a salesman, and he has a sister called Deborah. He is engaged to a woman called Justine (not THAT Justine).
Alex James is also in 'Fat Les' with Keith Allen, and Damien Hirst. They have come up with songs such as Vindaloo for the World Cup 98 and Jerusalem for Euro 2000, Naughty Christmas and Who Invented Fish 'N' Chips. If you want to look for these at Amazon click the link...
03/2007 - As well as still being in Blur, Alex James is now a farmer and a Visiting Scientist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Europe's largest space research facility. He lives with his wife and children in the Cotswolds.

For Alex James, music had always been a door to a more exciting life: a way to travel, meet new people and, hopefully, pick up girls. But as bass player of Blur – one of the most successful British bands of all time – his journey was more exciting and extreme than he could ever have predicted. Success catapulted him from a slug-infested squat in Camberwell to a world of private jets and world-class restaurants. As ‘the second drunkest member of the world’s drunkest band’ life was always chaotic, but Alex James retained a boundless enthusiasm and curiosity at odds with his hedonistic lifestyle. From nights in the Groucho with Damien Hirst, to dancing to Sister Sledge with Bjork, to being bitten on the nose by the lead singer of Iron Maiden, he offers a fascinating and hilarious insight into the world of celebrity. At its heart, however, Bit of a Blur is the picaresque tale of one man’s search to find meaning and happiness in an increasingly surreal world. Pleasingly unrepentant but nonetheless a reformed man, Alex James is the perfect chronicler of his generation – witty, observant, frank and brimming with joie de vivre.
