Dave Rowntree
partially taken from blurpoint
Dave Rowntree was born on 8 May 1963 in Colchester. When he first announced that he wanted to make music, his parents bought him a set of bagpipes. Not suprisingly, he abandoned them for a drumkit. He was taught to play drums the hard way - by a gargantuan Scotsman who taped a sixpence to the drum skin and smacked the pupil across the back of the head if his stick ever missed the target. By a coincidence, Dave had also attended some of the Saturday morning jazz classes run by Graham's father. He played in Idle Vice, a jazz punk trio, Hazel Dean, The Carpets Eaters From Hell, and Circus. For three months he also lived in London as a squat punk with a mohawk and played at various squat gigs, after which he moved wholesale to France and made a meagre living busking. Just like Graham, he became a protest vegetarian for a while but he failed because of malnutrition. His special hobby is flying, and he obtained his pilots' license a couple of years ago. His mother was a pianist with the London Orchestra, his father was a BBC sound engineer (now retired), and he has a sister called Sarah. He is married to a woman named Paula. He is the only member of Blur who ever completed their degrees, a Higher National Degree in Computer Science from Woolwich.
Dave seems to spend a lot of time animating now and working with computers, he is also involved in the Beagle 2 Mission to Mars project - Beagle 2: The British Led Exploration of Mars
